HORSE RACING: Del Mar, 9/7/11
September 7, 2011 - 1:00 am
Today at Del Mar
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
4 Tuesdays With P – Clever win and capable of running much faster; Mike Mitchell unleashes an arsenal today.
2 Michailasheartlite – Huge class drop and switch to Joel Rosario mean business; for the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer.
Long Shot – 3 Safe Word
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 3-year-olds and up
3 Surplus – John Sadler is also emptying all barrels to vie with Mike Mitchell; should be fun watching the competition.
5 Lord Vronsky – Like the turn back in distance where he should be flying late; big rider switch to Joe Talamo.
Long Shot – 4 Sun’s Out
Race 3 – 6 furlongs, $85,000 CERF, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
1 Givine – Tries synthetics for the first time; has proven class on grass, may fit well as a late closing sprinter.
2 Rumor – Richard Mandella has high hopes for this filly; first stakes may set her up for a fruitful 4-YO campaign.
Long Shot – 7 Evita’s Sister
Race 4 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $37,000, Claiming $25,000, 4-year-olds and up
9 Times Gone By – Mike Mitchell may have overreached in the Cougar II off the claim; these are his friends today.
10 Red Alert Day – Huge class drop shows Doug O’Neill not afraid of losing him; lots of back class to move forward.
Long Shot – 8 Porfido
Race 5 – 1 mile, Purse $37,000, Claiming $25,000, 3-year-olds
8 Go Richie Go – He ran for cheaper than this at Gulfstream; good spot to recoup the claiming price.
5 Full Deputy – Tepid chalk in a wide open affair; kicks off a very contentious final pick 6 of the meet.
Long Shot – 4 Rhythm in May
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, $85,000 Pirates Bounty, 3-year-olds and up
7 Kinsale King – Should beat these if he has anything left in the tank; his Bing Crosby was better than looked.
4 Carbonite – His race two back, if repeated, would smoke these; if a high flying 6-of-9 wins over synthetics.
Long Shot – 8 Ain’t No Other
Race 7 – 1 1/8th miles (turf), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
6 Hard to Resist – Gets class relief from two graded stakes for this; meant to be a confidence builder moving forward.
7 Ela Gorrie Mou – Tough trip in last suggests results in here with a clean trip; turf racing is often times the trip.
Long Shot – 5 Glowing Spirit
Race 8 – 7 furlongs, $250,000 Del Mar Futurity, 2-year-olds
8 Creative Cause – He won the Best Pal with something left; like the parking lot post to stalk the early pacesetters.
4 Majestic City – Unbeaten favorite should excel in these one-turn stakes; by City Zip, 2-turns becomes a question mark.
Long Shot – 2 Gun Boat
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
5 Courtside – Smoking win last time improved his Del Mar and synthetic resume even higher; clearly the one to beat.
9 Galleta Monstruo – Claimed by Mike Mitchell off a sharp win in last; has the back class to handle tougher foes.
Long Shot – 10 Master Chef
Race 10 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 California Heat – Last favorite in the last race of the meet; would be appropriate if gutsy Barry Abrams takes the cake.
5 Swiss Charm – Ran well in her turf debut up at Santa Rosa; key for me is vote of Garrett Gomez riding for Eoin Harty.
Long Shot – 7 Evasine Charmer
Best Bet – 8 Creative Cause (race 8)
Del Mar Monday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 19/5/$43.40; Long Shots, 9/2/$21.60; Best Bet, 1/1/$3.20
Del Mar Totals – 599/136/$961.40; Long Shots, 292/45/$535.80; Best Bets, 34/14/$72.40
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – #1 Sophia (5/1) in race 7 at Presque Isle Downs. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Monday, Candyman E won at Parx Racing paying $2.60 to win, $2.40 to place and $2.10 to show. Stats – 150/97/$780.10
