TODAY AT del mar
By Richard Eng
Post Time 4 p.m.
Race 1 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $34,000, Maiden claiming $50,000, 2-year-olds
4 Del Siete Leguas – Nice improvement in last racing first time for a price tag; like that Garrett Gomez remains loyal.
2 Plenty of Henny – FTS from Doug O’Neill barn; has win-early pedigree by Henny Hughes, Rafael Bejarano will ride.
Long Shot – 6 Traweek
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, $100,000 CTBA, Cal-breds, Fillies, 2-year-olds
2 Willa B Awesome – Flattered when Killer Graces won next out; should see plenty of early pace to chase.
4 Roar Baby Roar – MSW graduate won easier than it looked; gets tested for class in a glorified NW1X allowance.
Long Shot – 1 Gogi
Race 3 – 7 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 Veillit’ – Mike Mitchell claimed this guy who is 8-for-8 first or second this year; we’ll see what improvement is left.
2 Morning Frost – Interesting to see Rafael Bejarano ride a horse from Los Al two races ago; appears in dead stroke.
Long Shot – 5 Warren’s Swap Fox
Race 4 – 1 mile (turf), Purse $54,000, Claiming $50,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
5 Brown Is Beige – John Sadler figures to make a big impact this meet before long; stretches out off 2 good turf sprints.
3 Anniversary Girl – Ran a cropper in last, but her race 2 back is a good one; Joel Rosario for the maestro Jerry Hollendorfer.
Long Shot – 1 Lemon Drop Ridge
Race 5 – 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $30,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Stary Light – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; figures to be along in time.
9 So Tempted – Like the turn back in distance off a pair of turf routes; adding blinkers on for additional focus.
Long Shot – 4 Candys Girl
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $24,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up
8 Low Gear Power – Dropped to the bottom to win last out; no one claimed so Mike Mitchell shoves him down our throats again.
10 Warren’s Warehouse – Won for $16k and is now dropped to $10k; red flag for most, but this is a John Sadler move.
Long Shot – 1 Saravas Wild Again
Race 7 – 1 1/16th miles (turf), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $80,000, 3-year-olds
5 Cloud Man – Talk about herd mentality, 3-of-4 races decided by a nose; he may be a future candidate to wear blinkers.
3 Red Sharp Humor – Speedball candidate should not play coy with these; suspect will try to steal the verdict.
Long Shot – 8 Great Warrior
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
2 Johardy – I can count on one hand the times I’ve picked Joe Steiner to win; moves from outside to inside today.
6 My T Quick – Been away more than 2 years, watch the tote board for clues; returns at the lowest class level of his life.
Long Shot – 8 Incisive
Best Bet – 5 Stary Light (race 5)
Del Mar Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 14/5/$35.60; Long Shots, 7/0/$0; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
Del Mar Totals – 33/10/$74.00; Long Shots, 16/2/$32.80; Best Bets, 2/0/$0
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – 5 Rock Hard Baby (2/1) in race 2 at Ellis Park. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Thursday, Charging Home ran out at Arlington Park. Stats – 118/73/$600.20
