TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 7 furlongs, Purse $54,000, Claiming $50,000, 3-year-olds
2 Hurricane Lake – Has a strong synthetics resume; claimed by Craig Lewis and nurtured for his Del Mar season debut.
5 Red Sharp Humor – Like the turn back in distance to this elongated sprint; big class drop too, has tactical speed.
Long Shot – 6 Offlee Wild Boys
Race 2 – 6 furlongs, Purse $20,000, Claiming $8,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
3 Forty Dates – Won two races back for an $8K price tag; this is the bottom, make no mistake about that.
5 Gotham Spirit – Her last 2 races show she’s found a home at this level; appears best when settled for one run.
Long Shot – 4 Meadow Lake Queen
Race 3 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $37,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds
4 Mr. Katz – Tepid favorite in an evenly-matched field; tactical speed aided by the turf rail out 14 feet.
6 Winsome Charm – Big-chance racing in the lowest class of his career; reunited with a rejuvenated Victor Espinoza.
Long Shot – 8 Gothic Samurai
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
8 Clever Chloe – FTS from the underrated Neil French barn; has a solid work tab, key vote comes from Garrett Gomez.
4 Khendum – Among those with experience, she looks the fastest; been away 8 months, the main question is fitness.
Long Shot – 7 Lanida
Race 5 – 5 furlongs (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
3 Quick Enough – Gets class relief from the Kerlan for this; not as quick as he used to be, class drop will really help.
6 He’s a Dance Star – Is 7-for-7 in the money on grass; he’s fast and will be aided by the turf rail out 14 feet.
Long Shot – 4 Master Chef
Race 6 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, 2-year-olds
7 Bling Cha Bling – Has lost to 2 talented colts in Night Tide and Creative Cause; keep an eye on the FTS.
3 Norm’s Passion – Been working fast for debut; you’ll have an edge in seeing the tote action on the many FTS.
Long Shot – 9 In Deep
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 14 feet), Purse $37,000, Claiming $32,000, 3-year-olds and up
6 Arcodoro – Ran evenly in last off the claim by Ben Cecil; drops in class and should be tighter for Garrett Gomez.
3 Cayambe – Tepid chalk in another wide-open affair; tactical speed will come in handy with the turf rail out 14 feet.
Long Shot – 1 Deputiformer
Race 8 – 1 1/16th miles, $300,000 Clement L. Hirsch, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
4 Switch – Was run over by Blind Luck in last, no shame; she loves her synthetics and the retirement of Zenyatta.
3 Zazu – The silks will be familiar, Zenyatta; she is talented on her own but clearly a couple steps slower.
Long Shot – 6 St. Trinians
Race 9 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, 3-year-olds and up
9 Get My Fix – Beaten favorite ran a cropper in last; he drops in class to his best level, he’s run well at Del Mar before.
7 Bullybullybully – Speedball should be aggressively ridden by Victor Espinoza; Kristin Mulhall adding blinkers on.
Long Shot – 3 Preferred Mandate
Race 10 – 7 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 3-year-olds and up
12 Link Suances – Speedball folded very late in last; this is one slow field, a repeat race will cash a paycheck.
8 Warren’s Tiger – Lost all chance in last with a bad start; his prior races can compete in the moribund field.
Long Shot – 3 Clocker Moment
Best Bet – 7 Bling Cha Bling (race 6)
