HORSE RACING
August 7, 2011 - 1:03 am
TODAY AT DEL MAR
By Richard Eng
Post Time 2 p.m.
Race 1 – 6 furlongs, Purse $70,000, Optional claiming $62,500, 3-year-olds and up
5 Wall Street Wonder – Has an experience edge over Chosen Miracle; showed what he’s capable of winning last out.
2 Chosen Miracle – Was eased in last after 2 big wins; for forgiving handicappers, this colt has good ability.
Long Shot – 3 Mensa Heat
Race 2 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Maiden special weights, Cal-breds, 2-year-olds
3 Unusual Heatwave – Exits a bullet work for this colt by Unusual Heat; suspect the FTS are the best way to go.
4 Points Offthebench – You’ll have a big edge over me in seeing the tote board action; has been working well for debut.
Long Shot – 5 Champions Gate
Race 3 – 1 1/16th miles (turf, rail at 14 feet), Starter allowance $40,000, 3-year-olds and up
4 My Boy Luke – Showing steady improvement and like that Rafael Bejarano remains loyal; will see a quick pace to chase.
7 Vote of Approval – Logical chalk ran well off a 3-month hiatus; has tactical speed to sit a nice stalking trip.
Long Shot – 3 Songfoya
Race 4 – 1 mile, Purse $31,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, 3-year-olds
1 Joker Face – Blinkers on is more ammo for Mike Smith to gun for the lead; speed is dangerous in a match race.
2 Parable – Suspect Chantal Sutherland will be forced to stalk and try to outgame her rival in the stretch run.
Long Shot – None
Race 5 – 5 1/2 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
7 L’Enchanteresse – Been away 5 months, should be fresh and ready to fire; layoff horses at Del Mar don’t need a race.
6 Abovetheinfluence – Claimed by Linda Mikus, which should offer some value; she hires Joel Rosario who is heating up.
Long Shot – 5 Free Range
Race 6 – 6 furlongs, Purse $63,000, Fillies, 2-year-olds
5 Dreamcaster – FTS from Bob Baffert; barn only seems to win every baby race at Del Mar, watch the tote for clues.
3 Cha Cha Latte – Exits what should be a live baby race chasing Weemissfrankie; moves from outside to inside here.
Long Shot – 12 Cavalletta
Race 7 – 1 mile, Purse $65,000, Optional claiming $40,000, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
5 Ambitoness – This is a ship-and-win candidate for Mike Mitchell; been waiting to cherry pick her spot.
1 Hopeful Union – I think she likes the stretch out where the pace is a lot softer; speed and the rail work at Del Mar.
Long Shot – 8 Hakuchi
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, $150,000 Best Pal, 2-year-olds
2 Creative Cause – Won the most impressive baby race so far this season; he is bred to run 2 turns, very high ceiling.
7 Brigand – Was second-best to a very quick colt in the Juvenile; more than capable of improving and relishing a distance.
Long Shot – 4 Night Tide
Race 9 – 7 furlongs, Purse $24,000, Claiming $10,000, 3-year-olds and up
7 Skippy Due – Tiny edge in a very difficult race; beaten favorite in last, is capable of better.
5 Mr. Saturdaynight – Tepid chalk in the hardest race in the pick 6; carryover of $145K will still take some doing.
Long Shot – 2 Forward Commitment
Race 10 – 6 furlongs, Purse $30,000, Claiming $16,000, Fillies, 3-year-olds
10 Bella Giornatta – Like the turn back in distance; hot Mike Puype barn still gets overlooked, he of Turbulent Descent.
6 Magic Mama – Rafael Bejarano had choices and opted for Peter Eurton; been away 3 months, fresh, fit and dangerous.
Long Shot – 4 Sparrow
Best Bet – 5 Ambitoness (race 7)
Del Mar Saturday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 18/2/$13.00; Long Shots, 10/0/$0; Best Bet, 0/0/$0
Del Mar Totals – 232/54/$396.60; Long Shots, 113/12/$155.80; Best Bets, 13/3/$17.00
SIMULCAST PLAY OF THE DAY – 6 Only Me (9/2) in race 10 at Parx Racing. For scoring purposes, we’ll make a hypothetical $2 win, place and show bet, $6 total. On Saturday, Boltzapper ran out at Calder. Stats – 130/82/$670.90
