April 1, 2011 - 1:15 am
TODAY AT SANTA ANITA PARK
By Richard Eng
Post Time 1 p.m.
Race 1 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies, 3-year-olds
1 Beautiful Sunday – Had her work cut out last time from post 10; moves to the rail from that parking lot post.
3 So She Dances – Finished inches behind the top choice in last; P Val has been moving horses up once he takes over.
Long Shot – 6 Gribble’s Gamble
Race 2 – 1 1/16th miles, Purse $54,000, Maiden special weights, Fillies and mares, 3-year-olds and up
2 Working At Night – Tiny edge in a difficult looking race; Jeff Mullins has an uncoupled entry so caveat emptor.
1 Heidi Maria – Like the stretch out from elongated sprint to route; expect P Val to put her into the race.
Long Shot – 4 Love Theway Youare
Race 3 – 6 1/2 furlongs (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds
3 Le’ Heat – Broke his MSW down the hill 4 races ago; big rider switch to P Val for the money shot.
7 Willyconker – Been away 10 months and is dropping in class; the main question is fitness, not his back class.
Long Shot – 1 Fandino
Race 4 – 6 furlongs, Purse $27,000, Maiden claiming $40,000, Cal-breds, Fillies, 3-year-olds
5 Tribal Mistress – Taking the biggest class drop in racing from MSW to maiden claiming; taking the blinkers off.
3 Judy’s My Angel – Typical green debut, broke slow but finished fast; should have gotten a good education.
Long Shot – 6 Go Sophia
Race 5 – 1 1/8th miles (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $34,000, Claiming $32,000, 4-year-olds and up
2 Red Alert Day – Big class dropper switches to the Simon Callaghan barn; last spring he ran in graded turf stakes.
10 Sir Dave – Interesting long shot was claimed by Mike Pupye; has tons of back class to run a winning race today.
Long Shot – 8 Lease of Life
Race 6 – 1 mile, Purse $20,000, Claiming $12,500, 4-year-olds and up
10 Equiparado – Big class dropper has proven he prefers the dirt; must overcome a parking lot post, but has the back class.
2 Self Insured – Claimed last out by Bob Hess off an even race as a beaten favorite; leap of faith in the vote of Garrett Gomez.
Long Shot – 5 Concerto’s Thunder
Race 7 – 1 mile (turf, rail at 15 feet), Purse $56,000, Allowance, Fillies and mares, 4-year-olds and up
5 Dubawi Heights – Well-regarded filly finally won her MSW; note she had won nearly $400k while still a maiden.
6 Warren’s Got Game – Hard-trying filly could get overlooked in here; could have the best closing punch of the lot.
Long Shot – 1 Come Touch the Sun
Race 8 – 6 1/2 furlongs, Purse $19,000, Maiden claiming $20,000, 4-year-olds and up
4 The Full Lavino – Ran out of space last time in an abbreviated sprint; should enjoy the extra distance today.
11 Lead Blocker – Has yet to duplicate his strong career debut; suspect P Val may be able to coax it out of him.
Long Shot – 10 Clocker Moment
Best Bet – 5 Dubawi Heights (race 7)
Santa Anita Park Thursday – Picks/Winners/Mutuels, 15/3/$51.00; Long Shots, 7/2/$21.60; Best Bet, 1/0/$0
