Wichita State coach doubles his pay in new 7-year deal

Gregg Marshall is staying at Wichita State, agreeing to a seven-year deal worth $3.3 million per season.

Marshall was making $1.75 million as Shockers coach and had expressed interest in the opening at Texas while publicly confirming he was talking to Alabama.

The 52-year-old Marshall had been mentioned prominently in connection with the Alabama search after Anthony Grant was fired as the Crimson Tide’s coach in March.

Alabama athletic director Bill Battle flew to Wichita, Kan., on Monday and was prepared to offer Marshall a contract worth $4 million per year. He released a statement Wednesday after Marshall agreed to the new deal with Wichita State.

The Shockers’ recent run of success had made Marshall a hot candidate and triggered a push at Wichita State to keep him. He has led the Shockers to the past four NCAA Tournaments, reaching the Final Four once and the Sweet 16 twice.

In eight seasons at Wichita State, Marshall has compiled a 204-76 record. His career mark at Wichita and Winthrop is 398-159.

With Marshall out of the picture at Alabama, Minnesota coach Richard Pitino was reported to be among the remaining Crimson Tide candidates. Pitino has a 43-28 record in two seasons at Minnesota and a 61-42 career mark in three seasons as a head coach.

Texas made a full-court press offer to Shaka Smart of VCU and was awaiting his official decision Thursday.
