TCU women to face Utah in title game

Helena Sverrisdottir scored 25 points and second-seeded TCU advanced to its first Mountain West Conference championship game with a 61-40 semifinal win over New Mexico on Friday.

Micah Garoutte added 10 points for the Horned Frogs (22-9), who will face fifth-seeded Utah (17-16) for the championship. Utah reached the title game for a third straight season by upsetting regular-season champ BYU when Michelle Plouffe scooped up Janita Badon’s tipped inbounds pass and beat the buzzer with a 15-footer for a 50-49 win.

There was no need for similar drama in TCU’s win over the Lobos (13-18), whose only lead came in the opening minutes.

The Lobos shot just 23 percent and were led by Jasmine Patterson’s 9 points on 3-of-10 shooting.

Rachel Rentschler’s 10 boards led the Horned Frogs, who outrebounded the Lobos 46-33.
