De Rozan impresses
July 11, 2009 - 2:20 pm
General manager Bryan Colangelo, head coach Jay Triano and the rest of the Toronto Raptors’ brain trust were all smiling as they sat together in Section 104 of Cox Pavilion. DeMar DeRozan, the Raptors’ first-round draft pick, had just put on quite a show at the NBA Summer League, scoring 20 points against Detroit and playing with the kind of energy that should have fans in the Air Canada Centre excited come November.
The former USC swingman never takes a possession off and his enthusiasm seemed to rub off on his summer league teammates. Quincy Douby was taking charges. Patrick O’Bryant was blocking shots. Smush Parker was diving for loose balls.
The Raptors may be 0-2 after losing to Detroit, 91-87, but hey. this kid gives them a lot to look forward to when the games count in November.
BACK TO BACK GOOD EFFORTS
Detroit’s DuJuan Summers had another strong outing, scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds in the Pistons’ win over the Raptors. He’s doing a nice job of getting his team off to good starts and he’s averaged 21.5 points in two games so far.
Austin Daye had a much better effort in his second summer league game. The Gonzaga product scored 19 points Saturday after managing just eight against Sacramento Friday.
LAKERS ON THE FLOOR
Can Ben McCauley keep up his fine play two days in a row? We’ll find out momentarily as the Lakers and Cavaliers are ready to tip in the second game of the day.
McCauley had 24 points and 15 rebounds in Friday’s 85-84 win over the Raptors. The guess here is he’s not a one-hit summer league wonder. He can think on the court and that should help him now that teams kind of know what he’s capable of doing. We’ll let you know how he does.
