Padres extend lead over 51s with late 3-2 comeback win

■ HIGHLIGHTS: At Tucson, Ariz., the Padres (49-40) were down to their last strike when pinch hitter Mike Wilson singled, scoring Dan Robertson and Gregorio Petit to extend their lead to 2½ games over the second-place 51s in the Pacific South Division.

Las Vegas starter Matt Fox pitched six scoreless innings, allowing five hits and striking out three while being staked to a 2-0 lead.

The 51s (45-41) scored single runs in the first and third innings in support of Fox. But reliever Jack Leathersich surrendered a solo home run in the seventh to Tucson’s Rene Rivera, and Hampson was unable to close it out.

The 51s’ offense was limited to four hits and two base runners after the third inning.
