Kris Bryant, the former Bonanza High star, was named the 2014 Minor League Player of the Year by USA Today on Wednesday.
Bryant, a Chicago Cubs farmhand, was the hottest hitter in the minors during his first full season out of the University of San Diego. He hit .325 with 43 home runs and 110 RBI during stints with the Triple-A Iowa Cubs and Double-A Tennessee Smokies. But the Cubs, who long ago dropped out of the pennant race, didn’t call him up in September.
Bryant received nine of 11 votes — seven from writers and two by winning the fan vote, according to USA Today.
Joey Gallo, a former Bishop Gorman star who plays in the Texas Rangers farm system, received the other two votes.
