Greinke, Diamondbacks reportedly agree to six-year deal
Free-agent pitcher Zack Greinke is headed to the Arizona Diamondbacks after agreeing to a contract, according to multiple media reports Friday night.
The deal is for six years, ESPN reported, and is expected to include guaranteed money of about $180 million. Greinke had opted out of a six-year, $147 million contract with the Dodgers after his third season to become a free agent.
The 32-year-old right-hander led the major leagues with a 1.66 ERA this past season as he posted a 19-3 record and, along with left-hander Clayton Kershaw, helped the Dodgers to their third straight National League West championship.
Kershaw’s move to the Diamondbacks was considered a surprise considering the team’s lack of postseason success in recent years. Arizona’s last playoff series win came in 2007.
The San Francisco Giants were rumored to be among the top bidders for Greinke, the 2009 American League Cy Young Award winner while with the Kansas City Royals.
In 12 major league seasons, Greinke has a 142-93 record with a 3.35 ERA. He is also considered one of the best hitting pitchers in baseball and a Gold-Glove-type fielder as well. He had two home runs and two doubles while batting .224 in 2015 for the Dodgers.
