Bryce Harper leaves game with leg injury

WASHINGTON — Washington Nationals right fielder Bryce Harper left Thursday’s game against the Tampa Bay Rays in the top of the sixth inning with an unspecified leg injury after making a throw following an RBI single by Tampa Bay’s Asdrubal Cabrera.

With runners on first and second and one out, Cabrera lined a single to right as second baseman Logan Forsythe scored to tie the game at 3-3. Harper’s throw sailed into the Tampa Bay dugout as Steven Souza, Jr., the right fielder for the Rays, was awarded home plate to make it 4-3 as Cabrera was awarded third.

Harper stayed on the ground for several minutes while holding his left leg. He walked off the field gingerly on his own power. Harper was replaced in right field by Clint Robinson, a 30-year-old rookie.

It was unclear whether Harper would miss additional games.

Harper singled in three at-bats Thursday and is hitting .344 and has 22 homers and 52 RBIs. He ranks among the league leaders in several categories. Harper was hit on the knee on a pitch in Milwaukee last weekend. He was limited to 100 games last year due to injuries.
