51s shut out on four hits, lose seventh straight game

Tim Cooney pitched a four-hitter to spark the Memphis Redbirds to a 6-0 victory over the 51s in a Pacific Coast League game Tuesday night in Memphis, Tenn.

The loss was the seventh straight for Las Vegas (29-24). The Redbirds (27-26) have won four straight and 14 of 17.

Cooney (5-2) allowed four singles, struck out four and walked two in his 108-pitch, complete-game effort. The left-hander hasn’t allowed a run in his past two starts, over 16 innings, and lowered his ERA to 2.55.

Four of Memphis’ runs were unearned. The Redbirds scored four runs in the fifth, two on Jacob Wilson’s homer, his second in two nights, and two after a two-out fielding error by third baseman Alex Castellanos.

The Redbirds’ final two runs also were unearned after a two-out fielding error by second baseman Wilfredo Tovar in the eighth inning.

Johnny Monell had two of Las Vegas’ hits, and Matt Reynolds and Travis Taijeron had the other two. Jayce Boyd was robbed of a homer on a spectacular catch by right fielder Stephen Piscotty in the fourth inning.

Matt Bowman (2-7) took the loss. He allowed four runs, two earned, on six hits and three walks in five innings.

The teams continue their four-game series at 5:05 p.m. Wednesday. Right-hander Logan Verrett (1-0, 1.93 ERA) will start for the 51s against right-hander Zach Petrick (3-3, 4.12).
