51s player fouls ball off trash can twice, once with teammate wearing lid

In a bizarre, trashy story involving Las Vegas, 51s catcher Johnny Monell jokingly donned a trash can lid in the dugout Wednesday night and it saved him from being hit by a foul ball.

After Las Vegas first baseman Brandon Allen belted a foul ball that knocked down a trash can in the dugout — and nearly missed hitting Monell — during a game at the El Paso Chihuahuas, Monell grabbed the lid and put it on his head as an oversized helmet. It proved to be a wise move as Allen lined the next pitch off the lid, much to the delight of Monell, who was downright giddy.
