Well-paid county firefighters must share the pain

To the editor:

The review panel charged with making recommendations for Clark County budget cuts came up with a surprising number: The average county firefighter receives $199,999 in annual compensation (Thursday Review-Journal)?

Nobody can blame the firefighters union for taking advantage of the county’s largesse, but, as with American car companies and the UAW, the party is over. They are going to have to accept some of the pain.

Crowd control

To the editor:

After some recent disappointing New Year’s Eves on the Strip, I was glad to see that not only were the rooftop fireworks back, but that police were not jamming everyone onto tiny strips of sidewalk while police patrolled Las Vegas Boulevard.

When I read the Review-Journal Friday morning, I was surprised to learn it was the masses who forced police to push back the barricades, not the police deciding by themselves. I will never doubt the wisdom of crowds again.

True hero

To the editor:

I do not believe there could have been a better selection than Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger as the grand marshal of the Tournament of Roses Parade. His actions during an emergency landing of a US Airways flight on the Hudson River were a true inspiration.
