GOP, Democrats? They’re all just a bunch of bums

To the editor:

With the stimulus boondoggle, the health care fiasco, failed bailouts, Haiti, underwear bombers, people sneaking into White House events and the other nonsense the two parties force citizens to endure, how can anyone have confidence in anything associated with Washington?

Forget about the Republicans and Democrats. They are all incompetent, arrogant fools, and the good news is that people are finally catching on.

Unfair burden

To the editor:

The state’s budget crisis calls for extreme measures. However, cutting state employee compensation by up to 30 percent — on top of the recent cuts — is not the answer.

The purpose of the government is to serve the citizens of Nevada. Therefore, it is only reasonable to assume the citizens need and want certain services. If this assumption is correct, then do what needs to be done and let all of the citizens of Nevada pay for those services by temporarily increasing the sales tax. This would be equitable to all and would solve the problem.

When the economy rebounds and tourism returns, reduce the sales tax. The citizens of Nevada would understand.

The idea of asking the state employees to fund the deficit is unrealistic and not fair. It is time for Gov. Jim Gibbons to stop campaigning under “no tax increases” and raise the money necessary. I would also hope that the governor would participate in the salary reduction, if passed, instead of providing a voluntary 6 percent tax-deductible donation to charity.

Another solution to the problem would be to eliminate all state employees. That way they would be put out of their misery with the constant uncertainty of wondering if their jobs and incomes are stable.
