Hold the pickles, hold the …

It’s such an obvious idea, you wonder why nobody has tried it before.

Not that food delivery hasn’t been around for decades. Pizza pies routinely come to our doorsteps via delivery. Same with Chinese food. And there are even private outfits that will deliver you culinary delights from high-end restaurants.

But for years, the prospect of home delivery by fast-food joints has been a nonstarter thanks to a “long-held consumer perception that fast-food burgers and fries travel poorly — and don’t warm up well in the microwave,” USA Today reported Tuesday.

In recent months, however, Burger King has been testing home delivery of its menu items at four restaurants in the Washington, D.C., area.

Make no mistake, if this practice catches on, it could transform the entire fast-food industry — think the Big Mac or the drive-through window. And given the tendency today of consumers to demand instant gratification with the least possible effort, there’s a good chance home delivery of fast food will be a smashing success.

Making it easier for people to eat poorly? Look for the Food Police and their Nanny State brethren to consider this an entirely distasteful development worthy of government attention.
