Suspect claims self-defense in New Year’s bar shooting

The suspect in a New Year’s Day bar shooting on Spring Mountain Road and Jones Boulevard told Las Vegas police he acted in self-defense, according to his arrest report.

Alen Kareyan, 27, was arrested after police say he shot Borislav Glavas at the XS Cafe Bar, at 3650 S. Jones Blvd., near Twain Avenue, about 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, police said.

According to witness statements and video surveillance, a fight involving several individuals broke out in the bar’s parking lot about 5 a.m.

Kareyan and another man left the bar after the fight, but returned about 15 minutes later with a gun, police said.

Witnesses told police Kareyan entered the bar and pointed a gun at the back of Glavas’ head. The two men wrestled for the gun after Glavas tried to take it from him, according to the report.

Surveillance video shows a man identified as Kareyan then shooting Glavas in the stomach and leaving the bar, according to the arrest report.

Glavas was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition. An update on Glavas’ condition wasn’t available Thursday.

Kareyan was arrested shortly after the shooting and faces charges of attempted murder and burglary with a deadly weapon.
