Three seek Assembly seat once held by Brooks

Three people, including a former state lawmaker, are seeking ousted Assemblyman Steven Brooks’ old job in District 17.

North Las Vegas residents Odis “Tyrone” Thompson, Fred Young and Kelly Thomas, who represented Assembly District 16, had applied with Clark County for the appointment by late Friday afternoon.

County commissioners will have the task of picking among the three — and whoever else applies by the 5 p.m. Tuesday deadline — at their April 16 meeting.

The chosen candidate will go on to represent the district in Carson City for nearly seven weeks remaining in the 2013 session, which must end by June 3.

Thomas, 43, is director of operations for Better Building Performance, a Las Vegas contractor. He was a Democratic legislator representing Assembly District 16 from January 1999 to January 2001. During the 1999 session, he was on the Government Affairs, Transportation, and Health and Human Services committees.

Thompson, 45, is the regional initiatives coordinator for Southern Nevada Regional Planning Coalition. On his application, he lists volunteer work that includes serving as a court-appointed special advocate for neglected and abused children.

Young, age unavailable, is retired. He had a career as a bailiff in Illinois and as supervisor for a telecommunications company. He was a delegate in the 2012 Nevada State Democratic Convention and the 2012 Clark County Democratic Convention, according to his application. In Illinois, he served on a zoning board of appeals, and was a township trustee and a parks and recreation commissioner, according to his application.

All applicants must be a resident of the district and a registered Democrat.

For the application form, visit the county’s website, http://www.clarkcountynv.gov/.
