State lawmaker wants ID for same-, opposite-sex couples

Assemblyman Elliot Anderson, D-Las Vegas, intends to introduce legislation to provide same- or opposite-sex couples a wallet-size card that shows they are legally registered domestic partners in Nevada.

He said the bill is in response to a recent situation where a woman was told she could not make medical decisions for her same-sex partner unless she secured a power of attorney.

The women had registered as domestic partners in 2009, and the law gives them the same rights as heterosexual married couples.

“These people need to have their legal rights upheld,” Anderson said.
