Clark County reports 96 new COVID-19 cases, 13 deaths

Updated April 23, 2020 - 9:57 pm

Another 96 confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 13 deaths from the disease were reported overnight in Clark County, according to data posted early Thursday by the Southern Nevada Health District.

The district posted the new data on its COVID-19 webpage, pushing the total cases in the county to 3,314.

The latest fatalities pushed the county death toll from the disease caused by the new coronavirus to 163. The jump in the daily deaths was the second highest single-day increase in the county, matching the total of April 6 and trailing only the 21 deaths reported on April 10.

The number of new cases was lower than levels seen Tuesday and Wednesday but higher than those reported early in the week and last week.

Hospitalizations from the disease also continued to climb, hitting 860. That number has climbed by 119 patients in the past week.

Nevada’s hospitals are not yet nearing capacity, however. The state reported Wednesday that 64 percent of hospital beds and 73 percent of intensive care unit beds were filled.

Meanwhile, Nevada recorded 127 new COVID-19 cases overnight, pushing the total in the state to 4,208, according to new state data.

The number of new cases was down from the 144 additional cases reported Wednesday by the state Department of Health and Human Services but higher than daily increases seen earlier in the week.

The agency also reported three additional COVID-19 deaths on its nvhealthresponse.nv.gov website, raising the total to 195.

The case total in the state was derived from tests on 34,749 people and represents an infection rate of just over 12 percent of those tested. That number probably overstates the infection rate, however, because people who are seriously ill or have had close contact with a diagnosed patient are more likely to be tested during the shortage of testing supplies.

In other developments Thursday:

■ The Washoe County Health District reported 26 new COVID-19 cases and one additional death, that of a woman over 100 years old. It was not clear if the victim had underlying health conditions, the district said in a news release. The report brought the case total in the county to 736 and the number of deaths to 22. The district reports that 224 patients have recovered.

■ Public health officials in Carson City announced four new COVID-19 cases in the Quad County region, which includes Carson City and Douglas, Lyon and Storey counties. The cases were those of two women in their 30s, one from Lyon County and one from Carson City, a Carson City man in his 60s and a male Lyon County resident in his 20s. That brought the number of cases reported in the region to 72. One person has died.

■ Nye County officials announced two new COVID-19 cases in Pahrump residents. A news release included no information on the new cases but noted that 25 of the county’s 31 confirmed cases have been in Pahrump.

■ The number of infections and deaths at nursing and assisted living homes and other state-regulated facilities continued to climb, with the number of cases in staff and residents climbing from 458 to 504 overnight and three more deaths reported. Deaths in such facilities account for more than 23 percent of total fatalities in the state. Local facilities hard hit include The Heights of Summerlin, which added 20 cases overnight for a total of 63; Premier Health and Rehabilitation Center of Las Vegas, which added 15 cases for 61 total; and Horizon Health and Rehabilitation in Las Vegas, which has seen the most cases with 71.

A previous version of this article incorrectly reported the dates of the biggest one-day increase in fatalities.
