Clark County adds 100 COVID-19 cases, reports 7 additional deaths

Updated May 7, 2020 - 6:36 pm

Clark County and the state of Nevada both reported triple-digit increases in COVID-19 cases and added seven fatalities, according to data posted Thursday.

The Southern Nevada Health District reported 100 new cases in Clark County over the preceding day, pushing the number of cases of the disease caused by the new coronavirus to 4,573. The district estimates that 3,768 of those patients have recovered.

The fatalities attributed to the disease raised the death toll in the county to 245.

The increase in cases was the largest for the county since 107 were added on Saturday and was higher than the average of nearly 83 cases per day over the preceding week.

The number of deaths was a bit higher than the average of just over five a day over the preceding week.

The state Department of Health and Human Services, meanwhile, reported 103 new COVID-19 cases and seven additional deaths.

That pushed the state total to 5,766, while the fatalities raised the death toll to 293.

The overnight increase in the statewide caseload was slightly below the average of more than 110 cases per day over the past week, while the fatalities were slightly higher than the daily average of a little more than five over the period.

Reports from local public health agencies and counties place the total number of cases in the state at 5,857, or 91 higher than the state figure. The reason for the discrepancy was not clear.

Nevada’s total caseload was drawn from tests of 51,357 people, which translates to an infection rate of 11.23 percent of those tested. That rate has been declining steadily since mid-April as the shortage of testing supplies in the state has slowly eased, resulting in more people with mild to moderate symptoms being checked.

Even so, less than 2 percent of Nevadans have been tested for the disease.

In other developments Thursday:

■The Regional Information Center in Washoe County reported eight new COVID-19 cases and one death. Total cases reported for the county are 1,030, of whom 431 have recovered, according to the center. The death toll in the county is 38.

■ Nye County authorities announced two additional COVID-19 cases in Pahrump, bringing the total for the county to 44.

■ Amazon confirmed a third worker at its warehouses in Southern Nevada had tested positive for the disease. The company said it was “supporting the individual who is recovering,” who was an employee at its warehouse on Nexus Way in North Las Vegas. The company has said it has put additional safety measures in place to protect its employees.
