150th Nevada anniversary license plate in works

CARSON CITY — The first hearing was held Thursday for a bill that would lead to the creation and sale of special license plates to commemorate Nevada’s 150th anniversary of statehood on Oct. 31, 2014.

Neena Laxalt, the co-chair of the Nevada Sesquicentennial Planning Committee, said her organization was pleased with the design.

While no one testified against the bill, Assembly Transportation Committee Chairman Richard Carrillo, D-Las Vegas, did not ask for a committee vote.

But since it is a noncontroversial bill and some of the revenue raised will be used to cover costs of the 150th anniversary celebration, approval is expected to come quickly.

Besides paying normal fees required for any license plate, motorists who acquire special plates pay extra money that goes to nonprofit causes.

The plate features a 150th anniversary logo and the state’s Battle Born seal. At the bottom is a line stating “The Silver State” along with 1864 and 2014.

Earlier this week, Gov. Brian Sandoval said he is looking forward to seeing the plate on cars throughout Nevada.

“The committee is very excited about the new Battle Born commemorative plate,” added Bob Brown, the Review-Journal publisher and the other planning committee co-chair.

Once the bill is approved, Troy Dillard, interim director of the Department of Motor Vehicles, said production would begin quickly. “We believe the design of the 150th commemorative plate will result in one of the nicest plates we will have ever produced,” he said.
