The Las Vegas Firefighters Local 1285 has endorsed former Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore for the Ward 6 Las Vegas City Council seat.
“We truly appreciate your voting history and expect you to continue your support for the health, safety, and bargaining rights of our members to continue in your new leadership role for our great city,” Las Vegas Local 1285 President Eric Littman wrote to Fiore in an endorsement letter.
Fiore’s votes as an assemblywoman on measures that affect firefighter health and wellness benefits and collective bargaining were the driving forces behind the union’s endorsement, Littman said.
Fiore voted for an occupational disease bill in the 2015 session, which took effect this year, that says lung and heart issues Nevada firefighters, arson investigators and police officers suffer are presumed related to their occupation, making them eligible for compensation depending on the length of their tenure.
“She has supported those issues that directly affect us,” Littman said. “And she hasn’t wavered.”
Early voting for the April 4 primary begins Saturday.
Fiore said Monday she was “humbled” by the endorsement.
“When elected, I will make sure that firefighters have what they need to keep Las Vegans safe,” Fiore said in a statement.
Fiore is one of nine candidates hoping to succeed term-limited Councilman Steve Ross to represent the city’s northwest side. A poll of 202 likely Ward 6 voters conducted this month by Public Policy Polling showed Fiore is the frontrunner, followed by Kelli Ross, who is aiming to replace her husband on the council.
Clark County School District Trustee Chris Garvey trails Fiore and Ross, according to the poll.
