9-year-old girl who was trapped in sand dies

LINCOLN CITY, Ore. — Police in the Oregon coastal town of Lincoln City say a 9-year-old girl trapped when a sand hole collapsed on her has died.

Lt. Jerry Palmer says police and firefighters responded shortly after 5 p.m. Friday and found a large group of people trying to dig the girl out. Palmer says officers helped extract the girl from a large hole that had collapsed on her.

Police began CPR after the girl was pulled free, unconscious and not breathing. North Lincoln Fire and Rescue and ambulance medical teams took over CPR and the girl was taken to a nearby hospital. Palmer says she could not be revived.

The spokesman says the girl was visiting Lincoln City with family members, who were with her when the collapse occurred. She was not immediately identified pending notification of other relatives.

North Lincoln Fire spokesman Jim Kusz (Kooz) told The Oregonian the girl and her family were visiting from Sandy, Oregon.
