Inquest postponed in death of woman shot by Metro officer

A Clark County coroner’s inquest into the death of a woman shot by a Las Vegas police officer in front of a check-cashing service has been rescheduled to March 26, the coroner’s office said.

The inquest into the death of Rebecca Huff Noblett, 19, shot by Las Vegas police officer James Carroll on March 3, was set for Wednesday but was postponed to give the district attorney’s office more time to prepare the case, coroner officials said.

The hearing will take place at 10 a.m. March 26 in Department 11 of District Court in Las Vegas, with lawyer Michael Cherry serving as hearing officer, officials said.

Noblett was shot after police said she drove her car at Carroll and hit him in front of the Out of State Check Cashing service at 515 Fremont St. Police said she attempted to cash a stolen check at the business.

Noblett’s husband, Johnny Noblett, who was in the passenger seat of the car at the time of the shooting, was arrested by police in Las Vegas last week on fugitive warrants from Tennessee and Texas. On Monday, Johnny Noblett, 23, waived extradition to Tennessee, where he faces drug-trafficking charges.

The Clark County district attorney’s office is considering filing charges of murder or attempted murder against Johnny Noblett in connection with his wife’s death.

Police took statements from two people who said Johnny Noblett told them he controlled the car that hit Carroll before the officer fired at Noblett.

They said Noblett, while in the passenger seat, turned the steering wheel and stepped on the accelerator before the car hit the officer.
