17-year-old victim of shooting identified
The 17-year-old boy who was shot and killed at a party May 6 was Juanito Granados of North Las Vegas.
Granados was shot about 12:30 a.m. in the 2900 block of Mitzi Avenue, near Owens Avenue and Mojave Road. He was taken to North Vista Hospital but died from his wounds.
Las Vegas police on Friday arrested 17-year-old Jonathan Vazquez in connection with the killing.
Vazquez was booked into the Clark County jail on multiple charges, including murder with a deadly weapon and battery with a deadly weapon.
23-YEAR-OLD VICTIM
North Las Vegas woman’s killer sought
The 23-year-old North Las Vegas woman who was found slain in her home Thursday morning was Mayra Maria Gaspar-Camarena.
Authorities said Gaspar-Camarena, the mother of a 2-year-old girl, was stabbed to death at a home in the 2300 block of Bassler Street near Civic Center Drive and Carey Avenue.
North Las Vegas police were still searching for her killer.
MANSLAUGHTER CONVICTION
Shooter gets 14 years in prison for slaying
A Dolan Springs man convicted of manslaughter in a December 2005 shooting death was given a 14-year prison term Tuesday.
Mohave County Superior Court Judge James Chavez imposed the maximum punishment possible under terms of a plea agreement for Vincent James Brink, 61.
Prosecutor Greg McPhillips said Brink shot Randall Hancock Eller, 37, of Dolan Springs, in a dispute over a missing water trailer. Eller died after being taken to University Medical Center in Las Vegas.
TWO-CAR COLLISION
72-year-old who died in rollover identified
The 72-year-old Las Vegas man who died after he was struck by another vehicle while pulling out of a driveway on Spring Mountain Road near Jones Boulevard on Friday was Robert Wolfson.
Authorities said a 16-year-old boy was traveling west on Spring Mountain about 9 p.m. in a 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer when he struck a 2004 Chevrolet Cavalier driven by Wolfson.
The impact caused the Cavalier to roll over.
Wolfson, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The teen was taken to University Medical Center with minor injuries.
Authorities said Wolfson appears to have been at fault in the accident, but the investigation is continuing.
NORTH LAS VEGAS
Pedestrian struck, killed by pickup ID’d
The 45-year-old man who was hit by a pickup driven by a man suspected of driving under the influence in North Las Vegas on Saturday night was Eduardo Bermea, authorities said.
Bermea, whose city of residence wasn’t known, was walking across Lake Mead Boulevard near Pecos Road about 9 p.m. when he was struck by a Chevrolet pickup driven by 32-year-old Las Vegas resident Jose Santiago, police said.
Santiago fled the scene but was taken into custody shortly after the crash at a nearby casino.
Santiago was booked into the North Las Vegas jail on charges of driving under the influence involving a death and leaving the scene of a fatal traffic accident.
THREE-VEHICLE ACCIDENT
55-year-old Las Vegas man dead in crash
The 55-year-old Las Vegas man who died in a three-vehicle accident at Tropicana Avenue and Jones Boulevard on Monday was John Petro.
Petro was driving west in a 2001 Pontiac Aztec on Tropicana about 6 a.m. when he slammed into the back of a 1998 Audi A6 sedan that was stopped for a red light at the Jones intersection, police said.
The impact forced the Audi across the intersection, where it struck a 1997 Ford Escort wagon driven by 69-year-old Peter Chesnut of Las Vegas.
Chesnut wasn’t hurt in the accident.
The driver of the Audi, Bin Lim, of Fullerton, Calif., was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries.
U.S. 95 CRASH
22-year-old killed driving wrong way
The 22-year-old Kingman, Ariz., man who died Saturday morning after he struck a vehicle while driving the wrong way on U.S. Highway 95 near the California border was Charles Mazurkiewicz.
Nevada Highway Patrol said Mazurkiewicz was driving a 1994 Jeep Wrangler north in the southbound lane of U.S. 95 about 4:45 a.m. when he struck the right front of a 1999 Kenworth tractor trailer that was traveling south.
Mazurkiewicz, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the Jeep and pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the Highway Patrol said.
The driver of the tractor trailer wasn’t injured.
I-15 ACCIDENT
Rollover victim was Sandy Valley man
The 37-year-old Sandy Valley man who died Monday morning after he rolled his 1993 Saab multiple times on Interstate 15 near Cheyenne Avenue was Dennis Bruce Jefferson.
The Nevada Highway Patrol said Jefferson was traveling north on the interstate when he drifted off the side of the road about 5:15 a.m.
Jefferson overcorrected, crossed both lanes of northbound traffic and went into the median while overturning, the agency said. Jefferson overturned and stopped in the southbound lane of I-15.
ROUTE 159 ACCIDENT
Motorcyclist killed in crash was 21 years old
The 21-year-old Las Vegas motorcyclist who died after a vehicle accident on state Route 159 near Red Rock Canyon on Thursday was Lucas Sandoval.
Emergency workers found Sandoval about 8 p.m. and took him to University Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The Clark County coroner’s office said he died from blunt force trauma from the motorcycle accident.
LAS VEGAS BELTWAY
Crash victim thrown from car identified
The 30-year-old Las Vegas man who died after he crashed his vehicle on the Las Vegas Beltway near Lamb Boulevard on Thursday night was Travis Johnson.
Johnson was driving west in a Pontiac GT about 6:40 p.m. when it drifted off the road, spun out of control and overturned, the Nevada Highway Patrol said.
Johnson, who wasn’t wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene, NHP said.
