19-YEAR-OLD DEAD

Car strikes pedestrian; driver accused of DUI

A drunken driver who lost control of her vehicle Wednesday killed a 19-year-old man walking on the sidewalk on Arville Street near Flamingo Road, Las Vegas police said.

Police booked 36-year-old Megan Adkins into the county jail on charges of driving under the influence involving a death and vehicular manslaughter.

Adkins was driving a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu north on Arville about 3 p.m. when she drove onto the sidewalk and hit 19-year-old Matthew Robb of Las Vegas, police said.

Adkins then struck a power box and knocked over a 75-foot-tall palm tree before coming to a stop in the roadway, police said.

Authorities took Robb to University Medical Center, where he died. Adkins also was taken to UMC and treated for moderate injuries.

DRUG-RELATED SEARCH

Police identify officer who fatally shot teen

Las Vegas police identified Patrick Ledbetter as the SWAT officer who on Monday shot and killed an 18-year-old that police said had pointed a gun at officers.

Police said Ledbetter, 39, an 11-year veteran of the department, shot and killed Kyone Johnson after he pointed a gun at officers as they were serving a drug-related search warrant at the Joshua Villas apartments, 3985 Cheyenne Ave., near Lamb Boulevard.

Johnson’s brother, Rayvon Wilkerson, 16, was shot five times during the incident and remained in critical condition Thursday at University Medical Center.

In February 2006, Ledbetter was among the 44 law enforcement officers to fire 600 bullets at Christopher Hawkins, who was in a second-floor apartment spraying bullets at police near Owens and Eastern avenues. Hawkins was killed after a five-hour standoff.

HIGHWAY 93 WRECK

Chicago woman killed when vehicle overturns

A 57-year-old Chicago woman was killed in a single-vehicle wreck Thursday morning on Highway 93 near Boulder City, authorities said.

The Clark County coroner’s office identified the woman as Velano Gundaway.

Gundaway was one of seven people traveling south on Highway 93 near Lake Mead in a Dodge Caravan about 8:15 a.m., the Nevada Highway Patrol said.

The van traveled into the northbound lane, and the driver overreacted to the right, sending the vehicle off the road, where it overturned, authorities said.

Gundaway, who was thought to have not been wearing a seat belt, was ejected, trooper Kevin Honea said.

The other six people in the van were taken to hospitals with nonlife-threatening injuries, Honea said.
