Henderson ranked among safest American cities by real estate industry blog

The city of Henderson has been ranked among the Top 10 Safest Cities in America by a real estate industry blog.

Movoto Real Estate Blog, a website that provides information and resources to home buyers, based its ranking on data contained in the 2012 FBI Uniform Crime Report, which compiles statistics from police departments across the country. The data was condensed into four categories: murders, violent crimes, property crimes and total crimes.

“Henderson has all of the benefits of being near the City of Lights (Las Vegas), without all of the drawbacks, like noise, pollution, overcrowdedness, and crime,” Movoto’s report stated.

Henderson placed fifth in the ranking. Irvine, Calif., was ranked first followed by Fremont, Calif.; Gilbert, Ariz.; and Plano, Texas. The second five where Scottsdale, Ariz.; Chula Vista, Calif.; Boise, Idaho; Irving, Texas; and Chandler, Texas.

Movoto looked at the number of crimes per 100,000 people annually, and ranked the nation’s 100 largest cities in each category, with 1 being the safest. Those results were weighted so that murder, violent crimes, and property crimes each comprised 30 percent of the final score and total crimes made up 10 percent.

Henderson Police Chief Patrick Moers said he is “proud that Henderson has again been recognized as a safe city.”

According to the FBI, Henderson had 168.9 violent crimes reported per 100,000 residents, including four murders and 61 forcible rapes in 2012. There were also 208 aggravated assaults and 172 robberies in the city of 263,000 that year.

By comparison, Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, which covers unincorporated Clark County and Las Vegas, reported 783.97 violent crimes per 100,000 residents, and North Las Vegas reported a rate of 763.91.

Henderson has previously been recognized as one of America’s Best Places to Live by Money magazine in 2012, 2008 and 2006 and was named the Second Safest City in America by Forbes magazine in 2011.
