Family flees fire; damage substantial

A fire forced four adults and two children from their east Las Vegas home early Sunday.

A 7:40 a.m. blaze gutted the kitchen and living room area of the house in the 2900 block of Howard Drive, resulting in about $100,000 in damage, according to Tim Szymanski, public information officer for Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

One firefighter suffered a minor steam burn, and the fire took about 15 minutes to bring under control, Szymanski said.

Investigators believe the blaze was accidental and started in the kitchen.

Awakened when they began choking on the smoke, residents of the home either broke out windows or fled through the front door, Szymanski said.

Another resident of the home was away at the time of the fire.

The American Red Cross is assisting the residents, Szymanski said.
