Veteran journalist, teacher named journalism dean at UNR

RENO — A veteran journalist, media executive and university instructor has been appointed the new dean of the journalism school at the University of Nevada, Reno.

William Winter will succeed Jerry Ceppos at the Donald W. Reynolds School of Journalism and Advanced Media Studies, effective July 1, UNR President Marc Johnson announced Monday. Ceppos is leaving to be appointed dean of the Manship School of Mass Communication at Louisiana State University.

Winter served as president of the American Press Institute in Reston, Va., from 1987-2003.

He was a correspondent for The Associated Press, executive sports editor of The Courier-Journal & Louisville Times, assistant managing editor at the Akron Beacon Journal and executive editor of Knight Ridder’s Star-News in Pasadena, Calif.

He also taught journalism at Kent State, Central Michigan and San Antonio College in Texas.–
