UNLV hires new provost

UNLV hired its law school dean as the university’s new provost Thursday, according to an internal email from President Neal Smatresk.

John Valery White was hired after a national search in which both internal and external candidates were interviewed, Smatresk wrote in the email.

White has served as the law school’s dean for five years. Previously, he was a law professor at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge. He replaces Provost Michael Bowers on July 1.

Bowers, who has been at the university for nearly 30 years, replaced Smatresk as provost when Smatresk took over the presidency in 2009. A university provost is the chief academic officer. Bowers plans on returning to the political science faculty, a spokesman said.
