University regent honored by alma mater

Nevada System of Higher Education Regent Jack Schofield was honored Friday night by his alma mater, the University of Utah, with the College of Science Distinguished Alumni Award.

The former World War II bomber pilot earned his bachelor’s degree from the university in 1949 before becoming and educator and administrator in Las Vegas.

Schofield, who has served as a regent since 2002, championed the importance of science and math at all levels of education. In 2001, Clark County School District’s new Jack Lund Schofield Middle School was named in his honor.

“He’s had a lifetime of service in education, to the state of Nevada, and here at the university,” University of Utah alumni and donor relations spokesman James Degooyer said in March after Schofield was announced for the award.
