The State Board of Education soon must recommend Nevada’s next education chief following the departure of Superintendent of Public Instruction Dale Erquiaga.
Gov. Brian Sandoval announced on Thursday that he named Erquiaga, his childhood friend, as chief strategy officer serving in the governor’s office. In the newly created position, Erquiaga will work as the liaison to education and workforce development agencies, a news release reads.
The release states Sandoval intends to appoint Erquiaga to lead a commission on spending and government efficiency for public education, a body created by recent legislation.
Steve Canavero, state deputy superintendent of student achievement, will serve as interim superintendent until the State Board of Education recommends a permanent replacement.
A spokeswoman for the Nevada Department of Education was not immediately available Thursday to comment on the expected timeline to name a replacement.
