Shoemaker named new dean of UNLV’s College of Hotel Administration

Stowe Shoemaker will be the next dean of UNLV’s William F. Harrah College of Hotel Administration, university officials announced Wednesday.

Shoemaker will assume his new role July 1. His annual base salary will be $275,000, not including benefits and a 4.8 percent pay reduction, according to Megan Downs, spokeswoman for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Shoemaker will also hold the title of Michael D. Rose Distinguished Chair and will receive an annual $10,000 stipend.
Shoemaker said he hopes to continue to enhance what the college already does. He plans to look at the program’s curriculum to see how the college can better prepare students for the challenges they will face as hospitality leaders. “The way we operated hotels 20 years ago is very different today and will be different in 20 years from now,” he said.

During his tenure, Shoemaker would also like to use research to work with leaders in the hospitality and gaming industry to tackle issues they face today, to “make their businesses more successful,” he said.

He also plans to keep pushing for a new home for the college, which now shares a building with the Lee Business School.

The college has more than 3,000 students and it needs its own facility, officials have said.

There are plans to build a $50 million building that would house the hotel college.

The building “becomes the showcase to really show how great we are,” he said. “It’s an environment for students that can help enhance their education and learning.”

Don Snyder, who will step down as hotel administration dean to focus on the UNLV Now project and other initiatives, wasn’t available Wednesday for comment.

Shoemaker holds a Ph.D. in services marketing from Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration, a master’s degree in hotel restaurant and travel administration from the University of Massachusetts, and a bachelor’s degree in business from the University of Vermont.
