School board to consider school police contract

The Clark County School Board on Thursday will consider a union contract for school police worth $1 million, including a salary boost of 4 percent to make up for a cost-of-living increase that police officers would have received in 2008-09.

The school police had been working without a new contract since 2008 because of a dispute over whether school police officers should have the same bargaining rights as other police and firefighters.

A District Court judge recently affirmed a ruling by the Local Government Employees Management Relations Board that sided with school police. Phil Gervasi, the president of the Police Officers Association of the Clark County School District, said it was his understanding that the district would not appeal.

The membership of the Police Officers Association of the Clark County School ratified their contract on Feb. 5. The contract covers the four-year period from 2007-08 through 2010-11 with no additional salary increases for 2009-10 and 2010-11.

“We’re getting what everybody else got,” said Gervasi in reference to a cost-of-living increase given to state workers in 2008-09.
