Regents consider pay increase for UNLV president

UNLV President Neal Smatresk might not receive a pay increase as the state’s Board of Regents consider his contract renewal.

Smatresk’s contract will be considered at the Regents’ Thursday and Friday meeting at the University of Nevada, Reno. The agenda item includes a note that says that depending on board action, the item could result in “a fiscal cost in excess of $25,000 per fiscal year.” However, Nevada System of Higher Education Chancellor Dan Klaich said he will make a recommendation not to give Smatresk a pay increase.

Klaich met with Smatresk, who believes that because faculty has not received pay increases, it wouldn’t be appropriate for him to seek additional compensation at this time.

“I think his evaluation was superb, and in different circumstances, I think a pay increase would have been justified,” Klaich said.

Smatresk’s annual compensation package is $349,046. He also receives an $18,000 housing stipend and an $8,000 car allowance.
