New leadership and staff planned for four struggling schools
Four persistently low-performing Clark County public schools have been assigned new principals who will be hiring some new staff members over the summer.
Their mission will be to improve student performance, with federal assistance.
The amount of federal funds the schools will ech receive for three years is unknown, but Nevada schools will receive a total of $3.5 million through the U.S. Department of Education’s School Improvement Grants.
Clark County’s new turnaround schools are Roundy Elementary School, near Sahara Avenue and Decatur Boulevard, whose new principal is John Haynal; Sunrise Acres Elementary School, near U.S. Highway 95 and Eastern Avenue, whose principal is now Margarita Gamboa; O’Callaghan Middle School, near Owens Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, whose principal is Belinda Jones; and Canyon Springs High School in North Las Vegas, whose principal is Ron Guerzon.
That brings the number of turnaround schools in the Clark County School District to 10. Carson, Elizondo and Hancock elementary schools and Chaparral, Mojave and Western high schools began their second years of turnaround in August.
