Nevada State College president to step down next year

Updated March 4, 2020 - 3:08 pm

The president of Nevada State College will step down after the 2020-21 school year, he said in a letter to the school’s chancellor and the Nevada Board of Regents on Tuesday.

President Bart Patterson, who has led the Henderson college since 2011, explained in his letter that he is “not seeking renewal of my contract which ends June 30, 2021, and will instead be pursuing other opportunities in business, education or nonprofit leadership.”

He said he has many projects he hopes to accomplish in the next 15 months, and that he announced his resignation this far in advance to give the board ample time to find a replacement.

Patterson said that when he stepped in as interim president in 2011, he was the school’s seventh leader in nine years. Because of that, he said he made a promise to stay for a while and make meaningful change — a goal he believes he’s accomplished.

“I willingly passed up other opportunities to keep my promise to Nevada State and its deserving students, and I am so pleased and honored by what we have accomplished together,” Patterson wrote.

He said that once he steps down, he will have been the longest-serving president in the school’s history.
