National Merit semifinalist: Genevieve Taylor | Green Valley High School

Genevieve Taylor
Green Valley High School

■ What college do you plan on attending and for what major?

I’m still unsure about both, possibly the University of North Carolina or the University of California, Berkeley. I’m interested in languages and cultural studies.

■ What extracurricular activities do you participate in?

Captain of the varsity soccer team, vice president of Young Democrats, volunteer for Obama’s Campaign for Change, volunteer for Human Rights Campaign and member of the track team.

■ What do you do for fun?

Play soccer. I also love to paint and write.

■ In detail, how did you prepare for the PSAT?

I went to Academic Coaching Services for SAT prep courses.

■ Why are grades so important to you?

Honestly, my GPA is not my main concern in high school. I find that grades are an unfair representation of knowledge and the learning process.

■ What’s your favorite movie and book?

“V for Vendetta” is the best movie ever made. “Lullaby” by Chuck Palahniuk is my favorite book.

■ What’s a guilty pleasure of yours — such as a TV show, movie or hobby — and why are you ashamed of liking it?

“The Vampire Diaries,” which is incredibly embarrassing to admit. The fan base is mostly pre-pubescent girls, so watching four episodes in a row often makes me feel as though I’m 12.
