Hearing on education set for Monday in Southern Nevada

Southern Nevada residents can express their views about education and Gov. Brian Sandoval’s education spending plan during a 5 p.m. Monday hearing in the theater at Green Valley High School in Henderson.

Members of a joint Senate-Assembly budget subcommittee will preside at the hearing. Sandoval is calling for a 9 percent cut in state spending on public education, including 5 percent salary cuts and proposals requiring teachers to pay higher retirement costs.

While the subcommittee is in Southern Nevada, the Legislature will remain in session in Carson City. Assembly Speaker John Oceguera, D-Las Vegas, said members will participate in morning and afternoon committee meetings via teleconference from the Sawyer Building in Las Vegas.
