Election to decide four regents’ seats

Four of the 13 Board of Regents seats are open this election, and all but one incumbent is running for re-election.

Regent Mark Alden in District 4 is forbidden by term limits from seeking office again.

The regents, who are responsible for establishing the policies that govern the administration of the Nevada System of Higher Education, serve six-year terms. Board members are not compensated but are paid $80 per diem expenses for each meeting and an annual expense account of $2,500.

The statewide board oversees the budget for Nevada’s eight public colleges and universities.

Two candidates, Stavan Corbett and Allison Stephens, will compete for Alden’s seat.

Regents Cedric Crear in District 1 and Andrea Anderson in District 12, both in Las Vegas, each filed for re-election.

Crear will face two opponents, Jeff Eggeman and Lawrence Ita. Anderson drew two challengers, Susan Bunyan and former Lt. Gov. Lonnie Hammargren.

In Northern Nevada, Ron Knecht, the incumbent, is being challenged by Rebecca Bevans, Michon Mackedon and Richard “Old Rick” Riendeau. District 9 serves Carson City and Douglas, Lyon Storey and Washoe counties.
