SOUTHWEST CAREER AND TECH TO PRESENT FASHION SHOW

Students from the Southwest Career and Technical Academy, 7050 W. Shelbourne Ave., plan to present a fashion show from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday on the main stage at Tivoli Village, 440 S. Rampart Blvd. Senior fashion students will present original designs in a five-piece product line. The show is free and open to the public.

UNITED WAY OF SOUTHERN NEVADA GETS GRANT FOR PRESCHOOL SCHOLARSHIPS

The United Way of Southern Nevada received a $670,000 grant from Windsong Trust to provide children 5 or younger with an opportunity to attend high-quality preschools. The fund will supply 100 full-time scholarships for one year.

NEW TEACHERS RECOGNIZED BY CLARK COUNTY SCHOOL BOARD

The Clark County School District Board of Trustees recognized seven New Teachers of the Year on May 10. Teachers are: Judith Alfaro and Edward Savarese, Sewell Elementary School; Daniel Cano, Jeffers Elementary School; Chris Reger, Brinley Middle School; Alison Zelton, Chaparral High School; Taylor Pfatenhauer, Cimarron-Memorial High School; and Bradley Keating, West Career and Technical Academy.

Teachers were nominated by their principals and selected by a committee of administrators from the school district and local colleges and universities. They will have their photographs displayed for a year in the Edward A. Greer Education Center, 2832 E. Flamingo Road.

STUDENTS RECEIVE SCHOLARSHIPS FROM THE PUBLIC EDUCATION FOUNDATION

The Public Education Foundation will award 424 scholarships totaling nearly $600,000 to seniors in the Clark County School District at the 13th Annual Scholarship Recognition Luncheon scheduled for Friday at the Palazzo, 3325 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

The scholarships will benefit nearly 340 students and range from $500 to $10,000, based on academic achievement and financial need. Since 1994, the foundation has awarded more than 3,000 scholarships totaling nearly $7 million.

ITALIAN FESTIVAL DONATES TO TEACHERS, SCHOOL ARTS PROGRAM

The San Gennaro Feast donated 600 admission tickets to teachers and $1,000 to the Public Education Foundation in honor of Teacher Appreciation Week, May 7-11. The donation to the PEF will be used to support music and art programs in local public schools as part of the Artists 4 Kidz program. The San Gennaro Feast was May 9-13 at the Rio.

ADVENTUREDOME AT CIRCUS CIRCUS TO HOST GRADUATION PARTY THURSDAY

FOOTHILLL HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST BASKETBALL CAMP

Foothill High School, 800 College Drive, has a summer basketball camp for boys and girls scheduled for June 11-13. The camp is open to students entering the third through ninth grades.

STUDENTS TO PERFORM IN STORYTELLING FESTIVAL AT WHITNEY LIBRARY

Clark County School District students in grades four through six are scheduled to perform in the Bristlecone Storytelling Festival from 5:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday at the Whitney Library, 5175 E. Tropicana Ave.

Students will recite popular children’s stories in the library’s lecture hall. The all-ages show is free and open to the public.

SCHOOL BOARD TRUSTEE TO MEET WITH DISTRICT D PARENTS

Clark County School District Trustee Lorraine Alderman plans to host an open forum from 9:30 to 11 a.m. May 30 at the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St.

Alderman, who represents District D, will be available to meet with parents without an appointment and share comments, suggestions or concerns. Spanish translators will be available.

MIRACLE MILE SHOPS DONATING CHANGE TO HELP STUDENTS

The Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood, 3667 Las Vegas Blvd. South, will donate all change tossed into the fountain near the southwest corner of the shopping center by Guess, bebe and Fat Tuesday in May to help support teachers and students in the Clark County School District. The money will be donated to Communities in Schools of Nevada, a dropout-prevention organization that supports more than 22,000 at-risk students in 37 schools.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA HELPS HOMELESS TEENS AFFORD COLLEGE

The College of Southern Nevada is raising money to help homeless teens attend college. CSN raised more than $1,000 at a barbecue fundraiser April 17 at its Charleston campus, 6375 W. Charleston Blvd. The event was part of the High 5 Drive, a monthlong effort by CSN and Silver State Schools Credit Union to raise funds for the CSN Youthful Enterprise Scholarship.

Donations can be made at the CSN Foundation’s website, csn.edu/foundation. Click on the blue "give now" button and, under "apply donation to," select the Youthful Enterprise Scholarship. Donations can also be made at all SSSCU locations.

UNLV TO HOST WORKSHOPS TO HELP SMALL-BUSINESS OWNERS

The University of Nevada, Las Vegas has workshops scheduled to help teach small-business owners what resources are available at UNLV libraries and how to use them effectively.

The Business by the Book workshop series is a four-part program that started April 11. The first workshop was Demystifying Your Customer: Market Research Made Easy. Future workshops are Getting to Know Your Customer, scheduled for June 13; Marketing Resources Revealed, scheduled for Aug. 15; and Social Media Socialized, scheduled for Oct. 10.

MEDICAL SKILLS FOR LIFE INSTITUTE GIVING DISCOUNTS ON TUITION
