SCHOOL MENTORING PROGRAMS GET BOOST FROM CITY NATIONAL BANK

City National Bank donated $5,000 to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Nevada in support of school-based programming with the Clark County School District.

BBBS offers site-based mentoring at 10 elementary schools in the district. Adult volunteers meet with students in the at-risk schools for 30 minutes once a week.

CADWALLADER MIDDLE SCHOOL TO HOST CHEER CAMPS

Cadwallader Middle School, 7775 Elkhorn Road, has cheerleading camps scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through June 15 and June 18-22. Camps are $125 and are open to kids 5 or older.

The Cadwallader cheerleaders will teach the basics of cheer, stunting, tumbling and jumps. Participants must bring a sack lunch.

Registration forms are available at my.ccsd.net, under the name Kathy Price. Forms can be dropped off at the school office. Proceeds will help the Cadawallader team attend cheer competitions during the 2012-13 school year.

FOOTHILLL HIGH SCHOOL TO HOST BASKETBALL CAMP

Foothill High School, 800 College Drive, has a summer basketball camp for boys and girls scheduled Sunday through June 13. The camp is open to students entering the third through ninth grades.

MESQUITE CLUB DONATES TO FRENCH ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

French Elementary School, 3235 E. Hacienda Ave., received a $5,000 donation from the Mesquite Club Community Service Committee. The donation will help purchase reading kits for the at-risk school.

French was selected in December to be the committee’s signature project for two years. Members have donated clothing and gifts to students, collected books for the school’s library and volunteered to read to students.

STUDENTS SUPPORT WEST LAS VEGAS library, RECEIVE SUPPORT BACK

Seven high school seniors received $1,000 scholarships from the Tom and Bonnie Lawyer West Las Vegas Library Academic Scholarship program. The scholarship was created in 2009 to award high-achieving students who frequent the West Las Vegas Library, 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd., and volunteer in the community.

HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS SHADOW HEALTH CARE WORKERS

About 140 high school students in the Clark County School District shadowed health care professionals May 23 at local hospitals as part of Operation Health Care Bound. Students were selected to participate based on essays about their interest in a health care career. The event was organized by Workforce Connections, the Nevada Hospital Association and the Nevada Institute of Nursing.

Participating hospitals included Centennial Hills, Complex Care, Desert Springs, MountainView, Southern Hills, Spring Valley, St. Rose Dominican, Summerlin, Valley and Nathan Adelson Hospice.

UNITED BLOOD SERVICES OF LAS VEGAS AWARDS SCHOLARSHIPS

United Blood Services of Las Vegas awarded 16 scholarships totaling $10,500 at the 12th annual Celebration of Life Awards and Scholarship Banquet May 24 at the Gold Coast.

Students at more than 50 schools participated in 140 blood drives this school year and donated 9,117 units of blood as part of the United Blood Services High School Challenge.

LAS VEGAS LATIN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AWARDS $107,000 IN SCHOLARSHIPS

The Las Vegas Latin Chamber of Commerce awarded $107,000 in college scholarships to 128 seniors from 20 high schools in the Clark County School District. All recipients plan to attend in-state colleges or universities.

The LVLCC presented the scholarships at a May 23 banquet at the South Point. Over the past three decades, the LVLCC has awarded nearly $1.3 million in scholarships.
