LIBRARY DISTRICT TO RECEIVE GRANT FOR MOBILE TEEN TECH LABS

The Las Vegas-Clark County Library District will receive a grant for $89,650 from the Institute of Museum and Library Services and the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to plan and design a network of mobile learning labs. The new program "will provide teens with digital media technologies, spaces, relationships and resources to connect their social worlds and interests with academics and career paths that better prepare them for success in the future," according to a presse release. The library district was one of 12 nationwide to receive a grant.

MCDONALD’S GIVES GRANTS TO TEACHERS

The Greater Las Vegas McDonald’s Operator Association awarded $8,500 in McDonald’s MAC Grants to 19 local schoolteachers Nov. 29. The program helps teachers raise money for unique classroom projects. The grants are available to all Clark County teachers in kindergarten through eighth grade. The program has donated nearly $31,000 since its inception in 2010.

LAS VEGAS ACADEMY TO HOST WORKSHOP FOR PROSPECTIVE THEATER STUDENTS

Las Vegas Academy, 315 S. Seventh St., plans to host a workshop from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday to help prepare students for theater auditions. LVA theater faculty and students will run the workshop in the Lowden Theatre on the corner of Ninth Street and East Clark Avenue. The theater program is asking for $10 cash donations from attendees to support competitions, travel and shows.

LVA plans to hold auditions for the 2013-14 school year in January. Students interested need to submit a magnet schools application at ccsd.net and call 702-799-7800, ext. 4202, to schedule an audition.

WYNN LAS VEGAS EMPLOYEES DONATE TOYS TO ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS

Wynn Las Vegas, 3131 Las Vegas Blvd. South, donated more than 8,000 toys to After-School All-Stars Las Vegas Dec. 4 at Lunt Elementary School, 2701 Harris Ave. For the eighth year in a row, toys were collected and donated by Wynn employees.

Other elementary schools that received donations were Bell, 2900 Wilmington Way; Wynn, 5655 Edna Ave.; and Roundy, 2755 Mohawk St.

After-School All-Stars Las Vegas provides educational programming for about 6,000 at-risk students at 15 elementary and middle schools in the valley.

LOCAL STUDENTS TO PLAY MUSIC, FUNDRAISE AT GALLERIA AT SUNSET

The Las Vegas Music Teachers Association is sponsoring citywide music events to raise money for the Blind Center of Nevada, 1001 N. Bruce St., and Rockin Music Zoo. The Blind Center provides music education to the visually impaired. The Rockin Music Zoo is a nonprofit organization that provides music education to underprivileged youths.

The final event is scheduled from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at the Galleria at Sunset mall, 1300 W. Sunset Road. The Play-A-Thon started Nov. 30 and features local students playing holiday music. Students have performed at the Magical Forest at Opportunity Village, the Springs Preserve and more.

NEVADA STATE BANK COLLECTING CLOTHES FOR STUDENTS

Nevada State Bank, 3480 W. Sahara Ave., is collecting clothes through Monday for the Professional Dress Closet at Foothill High School, 800 College Drive. The closet provides students with clothing for job interviews. Recommended donations include men’s and women’s suits, jackets, shirts, blouses, dress pants, skirts, ties, shoes and business accessories.

Nevada State Bank has partnered with Foothill for 11 years on various programs.

DISCOUNTED STUDENT TICKETS AVAILABLE TO DA VINCI EXHIBIT

"Da Vinci – The Genius," the Leonardo da Vinci exhibition at The Venetian, 3355 Las Vegas Blvd. South, is offering free admission to students 12 or younger with a paid adult through Jan. 27. The exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily, and tickets are $20 for Nevada residents. Admission for students 13 or older with a valid school ID is $17.

The exhibit is organized by Imagine Exhibitions and features 13 themed areas showcasing more than 200 pieces of artwork and inventions.

LOCAL CLUB OFFERS SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SINGLE MOTHERS

The Soroptimist International of Sierra Nevada Region’s District I club is accepting applications for financial assistance for single mothers interested in attaining higher education or training. The club will donate two $1,000 Women’s Opportunity Awards and one $500 award. First-place recipients will become eligible for a $10,000 finalist award.

The club is part of Soroptimist International of the Americas, which supports community-based projects for women.

LOCAL NONPROFIT HOSTS SUPPLIES DRIVE FOR HOMELESS STUDENTS

Project 150, a local nonprofit organization that helps homeless students, is hosting a fundraiser and supplies drive through December to provide food, clothing and shelter for students in time for the holidays. The organization was founded a year ago and has served nearly 1,000 homeless teens at 15 local high schools.

EXCHANGE STUDENT PROGRAM SEEKS LOCAL REPRESENTATIVES

World Heritage, a nonprofit student exchange program, is seeking volunteers to serve as area representatives. World Heritage offers qualified students from around the world between 15 and 18 the opportunity to spend a high school semester in the United States with a host family. Area representatives recruit and screen potential host families, supervise the exchange students in the community, organize activities with the students throughout the year and provide support to host families, students and schools.
