Charter renewed for Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy
Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy received a six-year contract extension from the Clark County School District on Thursday.
The Las Vegas school, near Martin Luther King and Lake Mead boulevards, is now a K-12 charter school. It started in 2001 with fewer than 200 students and has grown to an enrollment of 1,155.
Charter schools are privately run but remain public, relying on the same state per pupil funding as district schools.
Charter schools are autonomous and operate through a charter from the state or a school district, like Clark County. They must still meet the state’s student performance and accounting standards. If not, their charter could be revoked or not extended.
After reviewing Agassi’s performance, Clark County School Board members agreed — at the recommendation of the district’s Charter School Review Team — to extend the contract.
Board member Erin Cranor was absent, but the vote of those present was unanimous.
“There is no rubber-stamping from this board,” Board President Carolyn Edwards said after board members asked questions of Agassi’s staff.
Last school year, Agassi’s elementary, middle and high school students met the standards of the federal No Child Left Behind Act.
About 50 percent of Agassi’s primary students met or exceeded expectations in reading, writing and science, according to state tests. About two-thirds were at grade level or above in math.
About 80 percent of high school students were at grade level or better in math and reading. The proportion of students meeting writing standards was a little lower, 74 percent.
