CCSD officials address threats made on social media

The Clark County School District said in a Friday message to parents that it’s aware of “social media trends and rumors” that can create disruptions at schools.

“Please know that there are currently vague threats being experienced by many school districts across the nation,” according to the message.

On its Facebook page, the Clark County School District Police Department said a threat toward an unnamed school originated in Florida.

“We have been receiving SafeVoice tips all night and wanted to let the community know that the threats are a hoax,” police wrote late Thursday.

In the message to parents, the district said threats are taken seriously and they’re “often created by individuals outside our community with the intent of disrupting learning.”

“One of our top priorities is to provide a positive and safe learning environment for all of our students and staff,” according to the message. “We ask that parents monitor their children’s social media usage and engage their children in conversations about proper behavior and the expectations outlined in the CCSD Student Code of Conduct.”

The district also is asking parents to talk with their children about the consequences of making threats.

“Threats are not joking matters,” the message says. “All threats are taken seriously and will be dealt with appropriately.”
