Board of Regents opposes adding student member

The state higher education’s Board of Regents on Friday opposed a bill that would add a student to the board.

The board took action on the motion during a special meeting at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Assembly Joint Resolution No. 8 would amend the Nevada constitution to add a 14th member to the board. The resolution would have to pass two legislative sessions before being placed on a ballot for voters to decide in 2016.

Board members said they are not against student activism, but as proposed, the resolution would create too many issues, one being that the board would have an even number of voting members.

It would also be difficult to create a fair process to appoint a student regent, given the number of higher education institutions in the state, board members said
