Anti-abortion club suit against CCSD will be dismissed, law firm says
The Clark County School District will settle a lawsuit filed on behalf of a student prevented from forming an anti-abortion club at West Career and Technical Academy, according to a Chicago-based law firm that represents the students.
The not-for-profit Thomas More Society on Wednesday announced the district sent a letter Monday formally confirming that student Angelique Clark could start a “non-curriculum related, non-school sponsored, student initiated, student led” chapter of the Students for Life club at the campus near the 215 Beltway and Charleston Boulevard.
Negotiations are ongoing, the law firm said, but are expected to “lead to a smooth resolution and dismissal of the lawsuit.”
In August, the Thomas More Society sued in federal court to challenge the denial of Clark’s application to start the club as a violation of her free speech rights. A news release stated school officials told Clark of their decision to deny the club’s formation because the topic was too controversial.
District policy permits student groups to meet outside of class time, provided they have a faculty adviser.
The district did not respond to a request for comment.
