Clark County School District budget gets a boost
The Clark County School District will have $41 million more in resources than expected for the 2013-14 school year due largely to sales tax collections exceeding predictions and having a starting balance in its operating fund that is greater than anticipated, according to an amended budget adopted by the School Board on Thursday.
It represents a 2 percent increase in resources over the original budget for the year, with $2.105 billion in total resources.
According to the amended budget, expenses for the year also will exceed original budget plans by $29 million, due largely to one expense — spending $12.2 million on new buses to meet growth in student numbers, especially among special education students.
The original budget for the 2013-14 school year was adopted in May with several unknowns, namely enrollment and the beginning fund balance.
The district’s student head count came in at 314,643 this fall, which is 1,861 more than predicted. The Nevada Department of Education will provide $5,457 per student this year, a $12 increase over last year. Those changes will net $4.8 million more than anticipated.
The portion of sales taxes coming to the district – called school support taxes – came in at $824.1 million, which is about $12.4 million over the anticipated $811.7 million.
